Monitoring for Thickness of Iceberg A-68

Changes in the thickness of Iceberg A-68 can indicate the melting of the iceberg. Using CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 altimetry observations, in this project, changes in the thickness of Iceberg A-68 will be monitored. The thickness is estimated by using the freeboard height of the iceberg observed monthly through the satellite altimeter.

To estimate the thickness from the freeboard height of the iceberg, the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium state is used. In the assumption, the iceberg density of 917 kg m-3 and the water density of 1027 kg m3, respectively, are used.

In this project, the change in iceberg thickness since the separation of Iceberg A-68 from Larsen C Ice Shelf will be monitored.
